Why not use social media to help you learn SQL? You wake up and the first thing you do is check for Facebook notifications. Do you take a photo of your breakfast and share it with friends on Instagram? Maybe you argue with someone on Twitter about which James Bond was the best? Or maybe you are recording a short TikTok video of you singing Lady Gaga? Relax … It’s okay. You might be a social media freak, but so am I. Let's admit it and make it work for us. Why not use these platforms to learn SQL and develop our careers? Do you like this idea? Keep scrolling. In this article, I decided to list some interesting SQL-oriented social media groups you can join. You’ll learn SQL and have a chance to ask more experienced group members about difficult queries. And you can always have a laugh. Take my word for it: data analysts and developers have a crazy sense of humor. Let’s dig right into our social media SQL selections. 9 Places to Learn SQL on Social Media 1. We Learn SQL (Facebook, YouTube) I’ll start with my favorite. Well ... I'm one of its administrators, so it's obvious that I’d pick We Learn SQL on Facebook. It’s fairly new and not large yet, but it works well and is gaining popularity. What can you expect as a member of this group? Good SQL tutorials, database tips, interesting articles, SQL cheat sheets, and knowledgeable folks to answer your questions or help solve a problem. Group members are helpful to others and there is no intrusive spam. And, while you’re in the neighborhood, stop by our fan page and connect with other SQL learners! We also have a presence on YouTube. Many people like learning SQL via video; it’s a great way to see how a given function works or figure out how to effectively solve some problem. (Not sure where to find the good stuff amidst all the time-wasters? Check out my selection of YouTube Tutorials That Actually Teach You Some SQL.) If you're at the beginning of your SQL journey, try the We Learn SQL YouTube channel. Our expert, Adrian Więch, explains the basics of the SQL syntax and shows how to use specific SQL functions and features. You’ll learn what SQL and databases are, what JOINs are and when to use them, how to write good subqueries, and more. Our videos share a lot of knowledge and are a great complement to our basic courses, such as SQL Basic or SQL JOINs. 2. DZone: Developers Enabling Developers (Facebook, Twitter) If you work with SQL, you should definitely know DZone. If not – check it out quickly and add it to your browser favorites bar as soon as possible. It's a brilliant aggregate of programming knowledge. A lot of content is related to databases, SQL, Big Data, and AI. There are also interesting articles, some of which are by the same people you’ll find on the LearnSQL blog. I have been following DZone on Facebook for a long time. You can also find DZone on Twitter, and I advise you to do so. 3. PostgreSQL Group / PostgreSQL Europe (Twitter) More advanced PostgreSQL users should definitely join the official PostgreSQL Group and PostgreSQL Europe on Twitter. This is probably my favorite IT community. PostgreSQL is a powerful, open-source, object-relational database system that uses and extends the SQL language. Because it’s open source, it attracts many interesting people who, as part of the community, are developing this project by adding more plugins, functionalities, and solutions. Following these groups, you’ll stay informed on conferences, patches, improvements to PostgreSQL, and other interesting things. It’s good being up to date, especially if you work with PostgreSQL on a daily basis. PostgreSQL has been in the big three for a long time, together with MS SQL Server and MySQL. It’s worth learning because it has a future; more companies are switching to this open-source solution from commercial alternatives. Find out who is currently using it by reading Which Major Companies Use PostgreSQL? What Do They Use It for?. 4. PostgreSQL Facebook Groups There’s a huge number of PostgreSQL groups on Facebook; it’s worth joining a few. For example, PostgreSQL Users is a place where you can ask questions about working with databases, share an interesting link, or just read other members’ posts and learn more about SQL. PostgreSQL Server and SQL DBA Professionals are a bit larger. These are also good places to take part in discussions and read up on the subject. Of course, if you would like to be a member of a PostgreSQL group that speaks a language other than English, you can do that. Russian, Spanish, Hindu ... you'll find it on Facebook. 5. GitHub PostgreSQL Repository Ok, I know this is not classic social media. But we’re talking about SQL and more broadly about computer languages, so GitHub can’t be left off this list. This is the main PostgreSQL Git repository. It's a brilliant source of knowledge that gives you the opportunity to share what you know with others. Are you a novice user and finding the repository content overwhelming? Relax, you'll figure it out as you continue to work on your SQL skills. If you want to continue learning, I recommend our most complete interactive PostgreSQL course: SQL from A to Z in PostgreSQL. 6. SQL Server (Facebook, Twitter) SQL Server is an industry standard and it’s quite popular. Microsoft SQL Server is the official Facebook group supported by Microsoft. The fact that it has 350,000 members speaks for itself. Here you’ll find official announcements, tips, and SQL tutorials. Thanks to Microsoft’s support, the graphics and text on this site are perfect. If you’re into SQL Server, I also recommend following the Microsoft group on Twitter. A group created by SQL Server users themselves – and, in my opinion, therefore much more interesting – is SQL Server DBA (USA). You should also check out the SQL Server 2019, 2017, 2016 & Azure SQL DB and SQL Server 2008 - 2019 Facebook groups. 7. MySQL Facebook Groups I will be honest with you: I am not a MySQL fan. I know it's a great solution and it's megapopular. Still, for some reason, I prefer PostgreSQL and MS Server. So, I’ll be honest and admit I don't have a great understanding of MySQL social media groups. The official MySQL Facebook group is impressive and has over half a million members. There are a lot of articles and tips; you’ll also find information about upcoming conferences and webinars. Even if you don't use MySQL on a daily basis, it's worth being a member of this group to keep current (and keep an eye on the competition). Other MySQL groups worth your attention are MySQL DBA, Advanced MySQL, and MySQL Developer, Jobs, and Support. 8. SQL Family This is something completely different. This is SQLFamily – a Facebook group for SQL professionals and their families. The conversations and discussions, however, do not simply center on queries, joins, and subqueries. SQL Family is a support group – helping with everything from finding a job to fundraising for charity. The people here are really kind. It's strange (in a good way) that so many different people with big hearts can connect with SQL. This is a brilliant group whose membership is more than just learning SQL. I’d recommend becoming a member of this family. 9. Vertabelo (LinkedIn) LinkedIn is a brilliant place, especially if you are a professional or are looking for a job. Many IT companies have their own profiles; Vertabelo, the company behind LearnSQL.com, is there too. Add it to your watchlist so you don't miss any news from the Vertabelo team. Honorable Mentions A few things I uncovered are not strictly SQL groups, but you should still give them a look – you'll find very interesting and helpful tips. I’m talking about the Facebook groups Programming for Beginners, I Love Programming, and Code.org. Designed for programmers, especially those who are just starting out, they’re a great place to learn about all kinds of programming languages, from C + and Swift to SQL and Python. Bonus: Finding SQL Job Opportunities on Social Media Yes, indeed – you can find a job on social media. SQL groups are very good for this; they contain a lot of job offers as well as smaller projects for freelancers. There are so many groups that it is difficult to count them all. And where you live makes a difference, too. I like SQL & MSBI Developers & Jobs (Facebook), Stack Overflow Jobs (Twitter), and SQL Jobs (Twitter). Do you want to find a job with SQL and work with databases? I compiled a list of the Top 10 Websites That Will Help You Find the Perfect SQL Job. Check it out if working with SQL is your dream.
